OUR CURRENT PROJECT
Areas to address:
- Americans with Disabilities Act issues. Restrooms and downstairs rooms to not currently meet requirements. This must be addressed, not matter what happens with the remodel/expansion.
- Add flexable meeting and study space so that programming and events will no longer interfere with other patrons using the library.
- Update the wiring, windows, etc. to make the building more energy efficient and to better meet the needs of modern and future library users.
- Open up the ends of the building to increase space and visibility of the park and the five corners area.
- Add space for collection expansion and computing and future growth.
Evolution of an idea:
The Foundation had initially looked at building a new facility on property across the street from the community garden.
After discussions with the city and the architectural firms the Foundation interviewed it was decided that the new location would require multiple stories to reach the square footage needed due to the the small size of the lot. Multiple floors are undesirable due to the small number of staff who would likely be working in the library.
After an extensive search and interview process MLPLF hired Miller Hull Architects to help develop concept designs to renovate and expand the library. Miller Hull is also the firm responsible for designing the new MAC/City Hall facility.
