The Moses Lake Public Library Foundation is inviting the media, donors and the public to the Moses Lake Public Library on Wednesday, July 26th,  2017 at 5:00pm. At this time photos will be taken with the donors as the library begins the first phase of updating the shelving.

Attending the event will be members of the Rotary Club of Moses Lake and the Kiwanis Club of Moses Lake, the primary donors for this phase. Both of these service clubs, in partnership, have given $24,750 to the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation to replace outdated shelving in the library. The donation of $12,750 came from the 2016 Kiwanis Club of Moses Lake & Rotary Club of Moses Lake Golf Scramble, a $9,000 matching grant from The Rotary Foundation and $3,000 from the Sunrise Rotary Club of Moses Lake.

The Moses Lake Public Library Foundation’s current project is to help replace old, worn out, and inadequate shelving at the Moses Lake Public Library in Moses Lake, Washington. The phase of the project specifically addresses replacement of shelving in the children, juvenile and young adult areas of the library.

The library’s current shelving was built-in when the library opened in 1965.  The original shelves are laminated wood, which is wearing and breaking.  The original shelves do not meet modern seismic requirements for library shelving and this required the insertion of long bolts.  The bolts do not allow the shelves to be adjusted. Formats such as DVDs and CDs didn’t exist in 1965 so the library has worked creatively. What has been used for additional space is low cost and low quality.

New steel shelves will be interchangeable, come in a variety of shapes and styles to meet the needs of modern formats, and will meet seismic requirements.  The shelves in this phase will be mobile so that the library can optimize the very limited space currently in this section.

“I’ve been to our local library on weekends and seen first hand the number of residents that benefit from such a great resource.  I’m excited to be a part of a project that will support the library and provide some physical flexibility to accommodate growth and future programs,” said Tammy Nolan, Kiwanis Club of Moses Lake
Tim Fuhrman, President of the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation says, “The Foundation is thrilled to finally begin this first phase in replacing the library’s deteriorating and outdated shelving. This installation will replace many of the shelves in the library’s children and juvenile sections with mobile units that will allow the library to better utilize the space in those areas for events and other activities. These shelves are being paid for though a Rotary and Kiwanis donation from their golf tournament last year. Thanks to generous donations from the Friends of the Library, the Lioness Club of Moses Lake, Basic American Foods, and so many others, we will soon be replacing all of the shelving in the children’s areas, as well as those in the video, foreign language, and new books areas too. In fact, we’ve already begun making plans for shelving replacement in other areas of the library as well.  We are so thankful for the individuals and organizations that support the work of the Foundation to improve the Moses Lake Public Library! We couldn’t do this without them!”

The Moses Lake Public Library is uniquely positioned to make a significant difference in our community. They serve the entire community, and are open seven days per week. They offer programing to meet the needs of its users from preschool children to adults in their retirement years. They encourage users to explore new ideas and become lifetime learners, and they provide users free access to many collections, including online resources and the internet.

The Moses Lake Library Foundation’s mission involves promoting the development and improvement of the library’s services, collections and facilities. It provides advocacy, financial support, and leadership for library related issues, focusing on the expansion and updating of the present facility. The Soroptimist International of Moses Lake presented awards to two women and donated to the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation.

The group met at the Porterhouse restaurant on Tuesday night to present the awards.

Hilda Alvarado received the Live Your Dream Award for overcoming challenges to continue her education with Big Bend Community College. She received $3,000 as part of the award.

The Live Your Dreams Award is to assist women, who provide the primary source of financial support for their families, by giving them the resources to continue their education, according to the Soroptimists.

Moses Lake High School senior Casci Carpenter received the Violet Richardson award for her work with Youth Outdoors Unlimited. The Soroptimists donated $200 to the group on behalf of Carpenter and she received a $300 award.

The Youth Outdoors Unlimited organization helps facilitate outdoor recreation for disadvantaged youth.

The Violet Richardson award is for young women volunteering in their communities and schools.

“The award is given to young women whose activities make the community and world a better place,” stated a Soroptimist representative.

The Soroptimists donated $1,000 to the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation to help with the group’s efforts to raise funds to expand the library to meet public demand.

The Moses Lake Public Library Foundation is pleased to honor Alice Harwood who served the community in many ways, but most memorably as an early member of the Board of Trustees of the North Central Regional Library from 1970 to 1982 following Moses Lake resident Bryan Miller, who was chair of the first seven member NCRL board. She served two six year terms on the board representing the Moses Lake District.

Mrs. Harwood, an avid reader, not only sat on the NCRL board, but served her community in other ways. She and her husband Eugene began farming in the Moses Lake area in 1949. She knew it as a new, raw, hot, and dry, but fast- growing community full of opportunity where everyone worked to help themselves and each other. She was superintendent of the Arts and Crafts Building at the Grant County Fair for years and was also a member of Eastern Star and the O’Sullivan Grange. The Harwoods raised two daughters, one of whom has become a librarian. Her influence continues to be felt as the foundation moves toward expanding and remodeling the city library supported by this $10,000.00 donation in her name.

The foundation is seeking donations to help replace the library old, worn out, and inadequate shelving.

The library’s current shelving was built-in when the library opened in 1965.  Formats such as DVDs and CDs didn’t exist in 1964 so the library has worked creatively. What has been used for additional space is low cost and low quality.  The original shelves are laminated wood, which is wearing, breaking, and doesn’t meet modern seismic requirements for library shelving requiring the insertion of long bolts.  The bolts won’t allow the shelves to be adjusted.

Longtime ML Librarian and Foundation Member

The Moses Lake Library, Foundation and the community lost a good friend July 8 with the passing of Glenna J. Bingham, 84.

Glenna had lived in Moses Lake since she was 11 years old.  She started volunteering at the library in 1955 and was hired a year later as a full time clerk.  She worked there for the next 35 years, serving as the Children’s Librarian and faithful guardian of the books.  Some of her favorite memories were the summer reading programs and Saturday story hours.

Seeing the need to remodel and expand her beloved library Glenna was one of the founders of the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation.  She was also active in the ML Women’s Club, Soroptomists, Community Concerts, Allied Arts and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima  Catholic Church.

She was an amazing person and will always be remembered by many of us as our favorite “Library Lady.”

If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the foundation.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 10:30am on Tue., July 15 with Memorial Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 200 N. Dale Rd. here in ML.

The present Moses Lake Public Library was completed in 1964 and dedicated in 1965. In commemoration of its anniversary, the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation is composing an anthology of the collected memories, thoughts and stories about the library.

The MLPLF is asking for submissions to complete this project, you can write a story, draw a picture, take a photo, even create a poem for possible inclusion in the book.

Tell us what the library means to you. What memories of the library do you have? How often do you come to the library? What was the most memorable book you borrowed from the library? When did you start coming to the library? What library activities have you participated in?

Submissions of stories and poems should be no more than two typed pages, single spaced, with 1-inch margins and should be emailed to info@mlplf.org. Pictures and photos can also be emailed or dropped off at the Moses Lake Public Library.

All submissions for the Anthology book are due Oct. 31 August 15, 2014. All entries become the property of the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation.

The completed Anthology will be sold to raise money to support the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation as it seeks to expand and remodel the present library.
The Moses Lake Public Library Foundation (MLPLF) is a group of citizens from all walks of life working together to improve the public library in Moses Lake. While the foundation works closely with the North Central Regional Library District, which manages the library and its collections, and the City of Moses Lake, which owns the building, the foundation is independent of those organizations.
